Project Overview
In preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games, working alongside the University of Hull Lampada supported the Team GB Olympic team to create an immersive digital experience that helped athletes familiarise themselves with their training and social base in Japan. The physical venue was a local school repurposed for Team GB during the Games, and was an essential space for athletes to train, relax, and connect with friends and family. Our goal was to help athletes mentally prepare by giving them a clear and engaging sense of what to expect when they arrived.
Aims of the Project
The project aimed to provide athletes a view of the environment they would be living and training in. By helping them visualise the layout, flow, and setup of the venue in advance, the experience supported mental preparation and allowed athletes to focus more fully on their performance once they arrived in Tokyo.
What We Did
University of Hull students visited Japan and captured high-quality 360° video of the Tokyo school. Lampada used the video to develop an interactive experience that allowed athletes to explore the building remotely. Key areas such as the gym were fully recreated digitally , including accurate placement of equipment and the addition of Team GB branding to reflect how the space would look during the Games. Directional overlays and navigational arrows were added to guide users through corridors and key zones, creating a realistic, intuitive walkthrough.
Project Impact
The 360° experience became a valuable part of Team GB’s pre-Games preparation toolkit. It gave athletes confidence in their surroundings, improved orientation, and contributed to a calmer, more focused mindset. By blending immersive media with practical navigation, the project demonstrated how digital tools can play a meaningful role in high-performance sport supporting not just logistics, but athlete wellbeing and readiness.
