Project Overview

Exercise on Referral programmes are structured schemes in the UK where healthcare professionals, usually GPs refer patients with certain health conditions to local authority leisure centres. These programmes, delivered by fitness professionals aim to improve physical health through supervised and personalised activity plans. Working with East Riding of Yorkshire local authority, the University of Hull and Lampada developed a suite of applications to support these programmes, and address their challenges such as, large numbers of non-starter and drop out rates, inconsistent quality and delivery and limited data to drive early interventions.

Aims of the Project

The project aimed to improve outcomes for Exercise-on-Referral participants by stream lining the referral process, and help fitness professionals deliver a more personalised, consistent, and engaging experience. Using digital tools, Participants of the programmes stay informed, motivated, and engaged to help them adopt sustainable healthy lifestyle changes.

What We Did

a web application was developed for use by fitness professionals and a free to use mobile app for participants to access information and track activity. Capturing different data associated with an individual, Healthier Paths detects patterns that indicate a loss of motivation or risk of disengagement. The system then applies principles of nudge theory to prompt timely, supportive interventions for professionals to re-engage users in a personalised and constructive way.
