Scott is a computer science graduate from the University of Hull. He heard about Lampada’s internship program through the university’s careers department. Scott interns as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) developer, as part of the wider development team. He is mainly responsible for the R&D aspect of our AI and software development activities.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

In a nutshell, I am originally from Kenya and I moved to the UK to learn more about computers. The interest grew from watching my father working on various products involving computers from a very young age and my interest has been growing since.

What do you like to get up to in your spare time?

Well, often, I’d say half the time I’m usually playing video games. However, I love looking into various research papers regarding state-of-the-art technology in my field of work.

For example, how do the robots at Boston Dynamic know how to walk and dance? What algorithms did they use for that? I was in the process of making a robot hand, with the help of some YouTube videos and some papers however I put it on hold as other things came to take more priority. However, I look forward to completing it once I get some extra free time!

What is your proudest achievement?

I believe my proudest achievement was when I learnt and made a game environment with machine learning. Reason being it made me make the connection between all the maths I was learning in high school make sense. I used to hate math but since then, I have loved it.

What are your biggest interests in your field?

Robotics and Quantum computing. I have been following up occasionally on quantum computing and I believe it is a very interesting field that will soon have an impact in the technology industry as technology advances.

What is your favourite part about working at Lampada?

My favourite part on working with Lampada is the opportunity to work with lecturers and the Lampada team itself in relation to my field of interest and share my ideas with them.

I have learnt how diverse the industry is especially when applying new technologies. There are so many solutions (and problems) to explore.

I have learnt a lot from them, and I look forward to applying my knowledge to create interesting products.

What projects are you working on at the minute?

There are a couple of interesting projects that I am currently working on which I plan to bring to light so stay tuned!

What are your plans/goals for the future?

Given the situation we are all in, the future seems to be highly uncertain, speaking for myself that is. However, I do have a ‘big picture’ of what I would like to achieve. It may sound a little vague, the main idea is I’d want to create a product in my field of interest, especially robotics that would to some degree help a certain sector. Could be hospitality, agricultural, etc. The reason why I have not pinpointed a specific sector is because I find all sectors equally interesting at the moment with diverse applications/solutions.

What advice would you give to future interns?

Always do the best you can given the situation.
